Job Summary:
The Forklift Operator is responsible for the operation of forklifts to move materials around a work site. Their duties include preparing merchandise and securing it for safe, easy transport, using radio communications to determine priorities and performing regular machine maintenance on forklifts and other tools.
Essential Functions:
- Drives sit-down and stand-up forklifts, and other industrial vehicles such as cherry-pickers and automated pallet jacks as needed
- Moves hazardous materials
- Maintains clean work area
- Pallet building and pallet picks
- Stacks crates, pallets, lumber, or other material
- Ensures the safe and efficient movement of goods
- Checks that loads are centered and properly stacked
- Determines when repairs need to be made on equipment
- Loads and unloads product from and onto tractor trailers
- Quality assurance (QA) duties, including reporting product damage and shortages
- Utilizes radio frequency (RF) scanning equipment to track inventory
- Shrink wraps goods or otherwise secures them and prepares them for transport
- Weighs and records weights of products
- Documents arrival, departure, and movement and storage of goods, checks trucking manifests and bills of lading, maintains inventory, and tracks fulfillment of customer and vendor orders
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least 1 year experience as forklift operator
- Forklift or heavy machinery certification preferred
Skills/Key Competencies:
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction
- Ability to read and understand packaging, shipping documents, and safety guidelines
- Ability to perform basic math
- Excellent hand-eye coordination, peripheral vision, and ability with spatial relationships
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
