JOB SUMMARY
The Backhoe/Forklift Operator is responsible for safely operating forklifts and backhoes to move materials and perform excavation tasks at a work site. Duties include transporting and securing merchandise, digging and moving dirt, sand, and gravel, coordinating priorities via radio communication, and performing routine maintenance on equipment and tools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates the backhoe and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Pushes levers and depresses pedals to move machinery, to lower and dig shovel into surface of ground and to lift, swing, and dump contents
- Observes markings or ground, hand signals or grade slates to remove material when operating machine at an excavation site
- Drives sit-down and stand-up forklifts, and other industrial vehicles such as cherry-pickers and automated pallet jacks as needed
- Moves hazardous materials
- Maintains clean work area
- Pallet building and pallet picks
- Stacks crates, pallets, lumber, or other material
- Ensures the safe and efficient movement of goods
- Checks that loads are centered and properly stacked
- Determines when repairs need to be made on equipment
- Loads and unloads product from and onto tractor trailers
- Quality assurance (QA) duties, including reporting product damage and shortages
- Utilizes radio frequency (RF) scanning equipment to track inventory
- Shrink wraps goods or otherwise secures them and prepares them for transport
- Weighs and records weights of products
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment
- Documents arrival, departure, and movement and storage of goods, checks trucking manifests and bills of lading, maintains inventory, and tracks fulfillment of customer and vendor orders
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED required
- TWIC Required
- At least 3 years’ experience as a backhoe and forklift operator
SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
