JOB SUMMARY
The Survey Party Chief is responsible for providing construction layout on Highway projects. They will lead a two-man crew, making sure that their work is accurate, useful, and meaningful to the construction crews. They will engage in all aspects of the project and coordinate with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and field engineers while ensuring control and layout are accurate to specified tolerances. Leadership ability, a strong understanding of construction plans and aptitude in general mathematics are essential.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Communicate, timely and accurately, with Survey Manager daily to establish workload and its associated needs
- Perform construction layout work, competently and accurately, as specified by Survey Manager
- Construction Staking: Offsets, Hubs, Stakes, & Laths
- Calculate grades for roadways, curb and gutter, utility or ditch flowlines, curb ramps, bridge structures, etc.
- Analyze construction drawings and other documentation as needed to complete surveys
- Identify and report design errors in construction drawings to the Survey Manager or Superintendent
- Oversee and direct the daily activities of the Rod Man, providing training regarding surveying practices and procedures
- Ensure assigned survey equipment is calibrated and performing as intended
- Generate and maintain accurate job aid for duties assigned
- Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Survey Party Chief in construction surveying
SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, cross sections, and details for civil projects
- Understand coordinate systems and alignment geometries
- Proficiency in the use of total stations, GPS Receivers, data collectors, Robotic total station, and conventional levels
- Basic computer skills Microsoft Office Programs
- Valid driver’s license and have successful completion of pre-employment MVR, background, and drug screen
- Ability to work independently
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Be initiative-taking with the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to quickly learn the organizations systems
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Walk long distances, work long hours when necessary
- Ability to carry survey instruments and equipment
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds
- Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
