Job Summary

The Tank Fitter Welder will be responsible for using hand welding, flame cutting, hand soldering, or brazing equipment to weld, repair or join metal pipe or structural components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products to build and fabricate storage tanks.

Essential Functions

  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
  • Recognize, set up and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment
  • Operate welding machines
  • Lay out, fits and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms, such as tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, and within all heavy construction
  • Welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks
  • Generate and maintain accurate job aid for duties assigned
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 3 years’ experience as a welder required
  • Successful pass weld test (stick, tig, sub-arc, flux core, or mig)

Skills / Key Competencies

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written with co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Adhere to strict safety standards and procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction
  • Working knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
  • Working knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Ability to perform arithmetic functions
  • Working knowledge of welding and metallurgy (SMAW, FCAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW)
  • Ability to travel and work away from home as required for the job
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to twist, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch as required to perform essential functions for extended periods of time.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help.
  • Be able to work in extreme weather conditions, hot and cold weather.
