About
Originally designated in the 2005 Corpus Christi Urban Transportation Plan to be a four-lane, A-2 Divided Secondary Arterial Street, South Staples Street was later redefined under Bond Issue 2008 to be improved to a five-lane, A-1 Undivided Minor Arterial Street. This upgrade involved two through lanes in each direction with a continuous left-turn center lane.
Despite an initial estimate of nearly three years for completion, the Corpus Christi City Council incentivized a faster completion by approving a contractor bonus. This strategic decision, combined with meticulous weekly planning sessions and collaboration among team members, played a crucial role in keeping the project on track despite its aggressive schedule. The project saw Bay Ltd. crews work diligently, supported by City Engineers, Freese & Nichols Engineer Nick Cecava, RH Shackelford Engineer Jerry Shoemaker, and various Bay team members. The collaborative effort resulted in the project’s completion in just 16.5 months, well ahead of the original 30-month estimate, and even 1.5 months earlier than the revised schedule.
