JOB SUMMARY

The pipelayer is responsible for the manual labor-intensive work to install underground utilities – including storm drainage, water, and sewer systems-on road and infrastructure projects.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Excavate and shape trenches manually with shovels, picks, and hand tools.
  • Installs concrete, clay, steel, ductile iron, pvc, and any other type of pipe for storm drainage, water lines, gas lines, and sanitary sewer line.
  • Assist equipment operators with layout, depth checks, and spotting.
  • Manually lift, position, and align sections of pipe (concrete, pvc, ductile iron)
  • Use hand tools to cut pipes and adjust pipes to fit trench conditions
  • Connect pipe sections and seal joints, using welding equipment, cement, or glue
  • Manually cover pipes with sand, dirt, or other loose materials onto surfaces
  • Backfill trenches and compact materials manually or with small compaction tools.
  • Use hand levels, grade rods, and string lines to maintain proper pipe slope and alignment.
  • Follow grade stakes and laser levels under supervision.
  • Inspect places where pipes are fitted together to ensure pipes are spaced out properly and according to specifications
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least 2-3 years’ experience in highway, bridge, sewer, and road construction

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in pipelaying or civil construction preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of pipe types and installation methods.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
  • Ability to read construction plans and grade stakes a plus

 

 

SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to work under pressure to meet project targets and deadlines
  • Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
  • Must be punctual and dependable
  • Follows verbal and written instructions carefully
  • Ability to maintain safety in active, heavy-equipment and traffic environments

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas.
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Capable of standing, bending, kneeling, and working in trenches for extended periods.
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
