JOB SUMMARY
The Shop Structural Ironworker will raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. May erect metal storage tanks and assemble prefabricated metal buildings in a fabrication shop.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of materials
- Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors
- Bolt aligned structural steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place
- Fasten structural steel members to hoist cables, using chains, cables, or rope
- Hoist steel beams, girders, or columns into place, using cranes or signaling hoisting equipment operators to lift and position structural steel members
- Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment using plumb bob and level
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least 3 years’ experience as a structural ironworker
- Ability to pass a written test and/or a welding test
SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES
- Working knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings
- Knowledge of arithmetic
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Able to work non-routine hours, when necessary
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Ability to stand for long periods of time which may consist of 8 or more hours
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another constantly perform repeating motions with feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers to include walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting, bending, gripping, climbing
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolds
- Ability to walk on beams and narrow surfaces at and above ground level
- Ability to work at various heights wearing fall protection
- Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
