JOB SUMMARY

The asphalt raker is an hourly skilled craft that assists with the application of asphalt on highways/roadways using handheld tools. Able to collaborate with other crew members to pave roadways per plan specifications and perform tasks of other positions as instructed by Foreman to ensure daily duties are met.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project
  • Responsible for the finished product while enforcing proper safety and traffic precautions
  • Prepare road surfaces for hot asphalt material
  • Distribute and rake asphalt material used in construction, repair, and resurfacing
  • Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness to properly adhere material to road surface
  • Repair utility cuts by removing temporary material and replacing it with permanent hot asphalt material
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least 1 year experience in highway, bridge, sewer, and road construction; with emphasis on paving

 

SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
  • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
  • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
  • Able to work non-routine hours, when necessary
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Ability to operate job related tools
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
