JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanic First Class is responsible for highly skilled work involving the repair and overhaul of engines and transmissions of various automotive machines and performs the more technical and difficult auto repair work.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Removes units such as engines, transmission, or differentials from the vehicle and replaces or repairs parts
  • Reviews ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights and installs/repairs accessories
  • Repair and replace damaged or worn parts
  • Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance
  • Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects
  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other parts to ensure that they are in proper working order
  • Use hand tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, or precision instruments, as well as power tools, such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment or jacks and hoists
  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks
  • Must provide your own tools
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least 3 to 5 years’ experience as a mechanic

 

SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction
  • Ability to read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
  • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and their applications
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
  • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
  • Able to work non-routine hours, when necessary
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Ability to operate job related tools
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
