JOB SUMMARY
The Roller Pneumatic Operator distributes, breaks down, compresses, and gives a finished surface to cooling asphalt. Barricade newly installed asphalt to prevent damages and supply customer with informational material and care instructions. Ensures the job site is clean and free of excess material.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operate the roller and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment
- Maintain and ensure vehicle and equipment are stocked with needed materials
- Safely operate roller in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling asphalt to desired compaction and smoothness
- Determine the speed and direction of the machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges do not form by excessive pressure
- Push hand roller and pound surfaces using a hand tamp or guide portable plate compactors over areas not accessible to a road roller
- Operate the Breakdown roller to achieve proper compaction
- Operate the Finish Roller in successive overlapping passes to apply the final finish and remove imperfections with a finish roller
- Ensure the job site is clean and free of excess material
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least 3 years’ experience operating a roller in construction
SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
- Ability to understand computerized controls and electronics
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
