JOB SUMMARY

The utility laborer will perform any number of general laborer tasks under the direction of a supervisor for highways, roadways, sewers, and bridges.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Load, unload, or identify materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials
  • Use a variety of tools and machines such as jack hammers, drills, earth tampers, and cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, grinders, saws, pressure washers, brooms, shovels, wheelbarrow, and carpenter tools
  • May dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, and clean up rubble, debris, and other waste materials
  • May set up markers, cones, barricades and may be used as a flagger to control traffic
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least 1 year experience in highway, bridge, sewer, and road construction

 

SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
  • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
  • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
  • Ability work non-routine hours, when necessary
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Ability to operate job related tools
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help.
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
